Poprad is located on the banks of the river of the same name, in the northern part of Slovakia. In its surroundings you can find many picturesque places, because the city is surrounded on both sides by nature reserves – the Slovak Paradise and the Tatra National Park. It is mostly visited by fans of skiing, for which there are many slopes of varying difficulty level. In Poprad there is a lot of ancient churches and churches, the most interesting of which are the Church of St. Egidius and the Cathedral of the Mother of God. In the Kežmarok area there are interesting excursions to the ancient palace and other historical monuments of Poprad. There are several museums and art galleries, which will be of interest to connoisseurs of history and art. There is something for the lovers of shopping – in the city center there are many fashionable boutiques, various stores and souvenir stores.
Climate and weather
The climate in Poprad is humid continental. The summer is warm enough and the winter cold, but not too frosty (during the winter months the air temperature drops to -9 ° C, which is quite comfortable for skiing.
The weather in Poprad is influenced by the High Tatras, which brings cold from the mountain slopes and cloudy, there is often morning and evening fog. December to March is the windiest period in Poprad, but the proximity of the river makes the climatic conditions quite mild and favorable for recreation.
Recreation
Recreation in Poprad offers mainly sightseeing tours of the historic center of the city and trips to the surrounding area – next to the city monument Spisska Sobota.
People come to Poprad to enjoy thermal water procedures in the local water park, which operates year-round. Here you can even have a treatment – the pools are served with mineral thermal water, at the water park there is a large wellness spa.
Another popular activity is skiing in the High Tarts. The best ski resorts – Tatranská Lomnica, Jasna, Donovaly, Vyshne Ruzhbachy, Oravice, Štrebské Pleso – are just a few tens of kilometers away, and are regularly served by railway streetcars on a specially laid narrow gauge, local buses. There is a ski resort in the city itself in the area of Kwietnica.
