Banská Bistrica is rich in traditions. In September every year Radvanska Fair takes place and for over 350 years this event gathers artisans from all over Slovakia.

Main sights
The historic center of Bratislava is incredibly beautiful. It is not surprising, as Bratislava, founded more than a thousand years ago, was for 300 years the capital of the mighty Hungarian kingdom, and the coronation site of kings and emperors of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1805, Napoleon signed the peace treaty with Franz I here.

On the hill at the confluence of the Morava and the Danube River rise the Gothic ruins of Devín Castle, 400 years the outpost of the Roman Empire.

The castle was the germ of the future capital of old Hungary. Its advantageous location on the banks of the Danube and under the slopes of the Little Carpathian Mountains predestined it to an outstanding task.

A city of German, Italian, Jewish and other descent began to develop with trade. Arab merchants also came here. Hungarian King Ondrej II in 1291 issued a decree confirming the rights of the inhabitants, which they previously had, but their documents were lost. He and many subsequent monarchs further enriched the inhabitants with these privileges of the city.

At the beginning of the XV century the castle was reconstructed: its walls were strengthened and a new palace was built as a representative royal residence. The castle became the true residence not only for the monarch, but the entire royal family in the XVI century after 1526, when the Turks defeated the Christian armies and captured a large part of the Hungarian state. The castle continued as a residence until the end of the 18th century.

In 1811 the castle by a fatal accident burned down and remained a ruin until 50 years of the twentieth century.

From 1563 to 1830 the city was the coronation site of the Hungarian kings. During this period, 10 kings, the reigning queen Maria Theresia and 8 royal wives were crowned in the sacred church of St. Martin. At the same time, printed news about the crowning of persons began to appear.

The first public park was opened in 1775 under the name of Sternallee on the south bank of the Danube at the site of present-day Janka Kralj Garden.

The old radnica on the Main Square in Bratislava was built in the other half of the 14th century. In the 20s of the 15th century, the building was bought by the city, and since 1868 it has been the city museum.

Today’s Presidential Palace was built in the 1860s as a summer residence for Count Anton Grassalkovich.

The first telephone appeared in the city in 1877.

The charming atmosphere of the old center is complemented by many famous historical, cultural and architectural monuments, which can be seen during a walk through the streets of Bratislava. In between are the majestic palaces, most of which were built in the 18th century during the reign of Maria Theresia (1740-1780). At that time Bratislava with its 33,000 inhabitants was the largest city in Hungary.

The intensive economic, social and cultural development of the city, and the concentration of royal court and nobility in Bratislava encouraged the construction of new palaces in the city.

As in Vienna, Bratislava saw the emergence of many town palaces within the old town and several palaces outside the outer ward. City palaces were usually built on two or three sites that arose after the demolition of the old burgher houses. They were usually four-sided buildings with an inner yard. The first floor contained the manager’s room, kitchen, storage rooms and rooms for carriage houses. The second floor was occupied by the families of the nobility, and the reception rooms were also located there. On the next floor were rooms for guests and servants.

The architecture of the palaces of the aristocrats emphasized the social status of their owners.

Dobšinska ice cave is one of the largest caves in Slovakia, its length is more than 23 kilometers, of the Strata cave system. Ice has been present there since the Quaternary period. There is no access to warm air, and temperatures range from -3.8 to +0.5 degrees Celsius all year round.

Dobšinská cave is the largest of the ice caves in Europe, and one of the largest on the entire planet. It is located in the Low Tatras mountain system, in the national park. The total internal volume occupied by ice is 110 thousand cubic meters, while the area of glaciation is almost 10 thousand square meters. In some halls the ice, accumulated here over the millennia, reaches 25 meters in thickness. From it are created whole compositions in the form of columns, descending from the ceilings of giant icicles, as if flowing down the floor and walls of the cascades and even huge clusters of crystals.

The origin of this perfectly executed small park goes back to the second half of the 17th century, when František Rákoci ordered a hundred linden trees to be planted in these grounds, similar to those in Zborov in eastern Slovakia. It is no longer possible to say for sure whether this is true or not.

At the turn of the 18th and 19th century the modernization of the plantings began. Still in the park and the surrounding area are magnificent Canadian poplars, which were brought by Count Aspermont from Holland. Anton Rochel, the count’s personal physician and famous Hungarian botanist, was instrumental in transforming the park in the English style.

After dividing the working spaces, including small garden architecture, artificial ruins, caves, antique-style churches and tombstones, and the renovation of the premises, a complete English park of 20 hectares was created. What has been preserved is the stone tower of the church, which once served as a lookout tower, the cemetery next to it with beautiful tombstones, a stone gate in the rear of the park, a Neo-Renaissance mausoleum, a tomb with reliefs of a knight, a sculpture of the ancient god Neptune in a pond and many other elements.

In addition to the six-stemmed protected linden and chestnut alley, worth seeing are pines, dogwood, sycamore, magnificent magnolias, Japanese maples, rhododendrons, roses, as well as rock plants, ivy, and plants climbing on the ground.

The botanical park of Lednické Rovne near the manor house is a small oasis of peace and relaxation. The place is famous for the glass workshops built in 1892. The history of glass production can be seen in the local museum.

The fundamental aim behind the establishment of the national park was to preserve the authentic mountainous environment of the Tatras and to preserve the flora and fauna of the region. In 1993 these protected areas were included in the UNESCO list as an important biosphere reserve.

The entire territory of the national park, depending on the altitude, is divided into three belts – high altitude, with a predominance of alpine meadows, medium altitude with spruce forests and low altitude with birch forests and fir groves. Among the fauna here you can meet chamois, golden eagles, owls, alpine marmots.

From Terhová the only road leads to Vrátna, which together with the surrounding nature is the most picturesque area of the Lesser Fatra.

From the point of view of hiking trails in the area of Vrathna four areas can be distinguished: Tesnjava, Old Valley, New Valley and Stary Dvor.

Just behind Terhova the road goes through a spectacular entrance to the Vrátna – important from a tourist and local history point of view, the Tesnjava Canyon in the bend of the Vrátnjanka Creek. It is distinguished by many rock formations and water cascades. The national nature reserve includes the Tesnawy Canyon, the ridge and the adjacent slopes of Sokolija and Bobut. In Tesnjaves starts the so-called Zbojnicki Corridor, which passes through an interesting complex of rock formations. Beyond Tesniawy the Vratna is divided into the Old and New Valleys.

At the end of the Old Valley there is Huta Vratna. Near the bottom station of the funicular from the Snilov saddle, visitors can stop near the symbolic cemetery of the victims of the mountains and near the Skok waterfall. Hata Vratna is the starting point for excursions to the main ridge of the Krivan Fatra, where the highest peak of the Lesser Fatra, the Big Krivan (1709 m), is also located.

When viewed from Pribylina or Gib, it is easy to recognize its peak by its peculiar peak curvature, thanks to which it bears its name.

The first ascent of Krivan took place in the 19th century, and since then the mountain has been considered a symbol of national pride and national pilgrimage. Recently, the pilgrimage tradition has been renewed.

The top of Krivanj is the easiest and fastest to reach from the Three Chandeliers. The first serpentine green trail takes hikers to Grunik, which at the end of World War II witnessed fierce battles between partisans and German fascists. From Hrunik, the trail follows the slope of Pregiba to the steep stone Krivanski Chute.

The reward for the hard ascent to the summit is a magnificent panoramic view. A frequently used descent from the summit of Krivani is the trail marked in blue, which leads to Yamsky Plaque. From there, the highway takes you to Podbanský or Štrbský Ples.
